Parolee charged in 2023 Des Plaines home burglary

A freshly paroled Chicago man has been charged in connection with a 2023 home burglary in Des Plaines, police announced this week.

Joe Mitchell, 39, of the 3100 block of North Oconto Avenue, is charged with felony residential burglary.

According to Des Plaines police, Mitchell and an accomplice worked together to distract a 79-year-old resident of the 200 block of Shannon Court and steal jewelry out of the home in May 2023.

Investigators looking into a different crime in another community found Mitchell had four pieces of jewelry reported stolen in Des Plaines, police said in a news release.

Mitchell subsequently was incarcerated at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. An arrest warrant stemming from the Des Plaines crime was issued in 2024.

Des Plaines police picked up Mitchell at Stateville on Friday after learning he was to be paroled that day, police Cmdr. Matt Bowler said.

After being charged in the Des Plaines burglary, Mitchell appeared in Cook County court Saturday for a detention hearing and was released, Bowler said.
