Letter: Respectable GOP has been hijacked

In response to Mr. Gohmann's letter: He writes, "as if Republicans and conservatives AREN'T concerned about the future of democracy, responding to climate change, etc.? What an absurd position."

Well, not so absurd. Indeed there are wise Republicans who recognize that the election was not stolen and that the facts about Jan. 6 need to be exposed because citizens are entitled to answers. The problem is those wise Republicans ARE NOT the ones who are running the party.

Responsible, wise citizens (no matter what their party) recognize the effects of climate change. However, Republicans in the House continue to resist setting specific emissions reduction targets. They oppose policies to reduce fossil fuel use, including taxes, regulations or mandates.

Admittedly, neither party is a model of integrity. They demand loyalty from their party members and ostracize opposing opinions. Opposing opinions lead to better government. Both parties could do a better job of listening to the opposition.

Our country is plagued by politicians on both sides who care more about power and control than the rule of law. We need to find the courage to withhold our vote from people who perpetuate misinformation.

Mr. Gohmann says MAGA is not a party; I respectfully disagree. The Republican Party has been hijacked and democracy shaken, not by responsible Republicans but by reckless, irresponsible ones at the top.
