Basketball roundup: Wauconda girls stay perfect; Grayslake Central boys edge Carmel
Wauconda opened up play at the McHenry Holiday Classic with a big win Tuesday to remain unbeaten with a convincing 52-22 win over Deerfield.
Wauconda (10-0) looked good from the onset as the Bulldogs raced to 31-12 halftime advantage.
Sarah Palmer had 9 points and 9 rebounds, Ashley Maxwell had 9 points and 6 rebounds while Alexia Manalo had 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Avery Geoghan added 8 points and 5 rebounds while Kelsey Piehl and Isabela Campdesuner each had 6 points. Charlee Baker led Deerfield (5-5) with 14 points.
Glenbrook North 59, Mundelein 52: Glenbrook North (5-4) knocked the Mustangs from the ranks of the unbeaten in Northbrook. Casey Vyverman led Mundelein (10-1) with 27 points. Grace Dunigan had 10 points while Anahya Castro added 9 points.
Grayslake Central 51, Antioch 33: Grayslake Central (6-4, 3-0) led 15-14 in the second quarter when the Rams went on a 10-0 run to pull away. Peyton Hoffmann led the Rams with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Addison Thomas had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, Ava Henne 8 points and Autumn Aliff had 7 points and 3 assists. Antioch is 4-8, 3-1.
Leyden 37, Morton 32: The Eagles (7-3, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the West Suburban Gold as Katherine MacLeod netted 24 points and Natalia Sokolska had 7 points. Morton fell to 2-6, 0-4.
Boys
Glenbrook North 59, Rolling Meadows 49: Rolling Meadows had its three-game winning streak stopped. The Mustangs, who had won five of their last six games, trailed by as many as 12 midway through the third quarter. Meadows rallied and was able to get the lead to within four points in the final three minutes.
But the Mustangs couldn’t come up with a key stop down the stretch. Spencer Repak led the Mustangs with 10 points while Tony Ruffalo chipped in 8 points. Glenbrook North (8-3) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Grayslake Central 42, Carmel 41: With the game tied at 31-31 late in the third quarter, Grayslake Central (7-3), scored 9 unanswered points and then held on for the conference win. Jack Maloney led Carmel (3-5) with 13 points.
Grant 84, Badger 75: Grant (5-2) rallied from 13 down in the second quarter to tie the game at 60 after three quarters. The Bulldogs then slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter to top the visitors from Wisconsin. Grant had five players in double figures with Charles Schlicht leading the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds. DJ Stitts had 20 points, Jayden Smith 12 points and 8 rebounds, Noah McMath 12 points and Damarrion Smith 11 points and 8 rebounds.
North Chicago 57, Wheeling 54: Wheeling (1-8) battled hard but came up a bit short at home. Zach Neukirch led the Wildcats with 23 points while Peter Kulig added 14 points. North Chicago (5-4) was led by Dy'Zhir Usher’s 18 points and Levi Finch’s 13 points.
Maine West 78, Francis Parker 59: The Warriors (4-4) evened their record by routing the Colonels (5-4).
Mundelein 51, Prairie Ridge 44: Mundelein (3-6) prevailed at home after losing Monday to Stevenson. Carson Koenigsknecht led the Mustangs with 15 points. Brandon Newell had 13 points, Cam Earing had 10 points while Reyes Zepeda contributed 9 points.
North Shore 67, Schaumburg Christian 30: Schaumburg Christian (5-4) had its four-game winning streak snapped to the Raiders (6-2).
