NFL can be saved, it just needs some uniform corrections
Maybe this is the wrong economy to even dream about changing jobs, but there’s a vital position that needs to be filled immediately.
So if chosen, I will accept the role of America's Uniform Czar.
The Uniform Czar will make all judgments and decisions regarding what should be worn in the professional sports world, and offer strong opinions on high school and colleges.
The goal here is for the czar to be surrounded by admiring staff members who say, “Sir, thank you for saving America,” and they actually mean it.
Is this Cabinet-style position necessary? Look, anyone with access to a certain streaming service could see what was happening last Thursday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wore their original orange jerseys with red trim. Do not refer to these as “Creamsicles.” It's a glorious uniform that should not be mocked.
Sure, the Bucs generally stunk when they wore these, but that's not the uniforms’ fault. It's time someone made it mandatory for these jerseys to be worn full-time, not just on special occasions.
On the other side, everyone could see it. Now someone needs to have the courage say it out loud, so here goes: The Falcons should wear red helmets — full-time, no exceptions.
Did anyone watch the Atlanta play Seattle the previous week? The Falcons wore all black, with the Seahawks in the dark green helmets, with gray feathers across white jerseys. Best described as dull vs. drab. Let's make the NFL colorful again.
There are so many issues that need to be fixed, so don't expect miracles on Day 1.
The Lions have been disappointing this season. Is it because they miss Ben Johnson? Well, start by controlling the controllables, Detroit, like putting stripes on your pants. The Lions have those all-blue or all-silver options that look like they're wearing pajamas. It's like the Ford family tried to save a few bucks by avoiding the last step at the stitching factory. Just ridiculous.
There are so many egregious uniform choices made by NFL teams. The only solution is to have someone step in and fix this mess once and for all. Here are some items on the to-do list:
Philadelphia Eagles — green and silver is a special combination. What even is the color of their current home jerseys? Go back to 1960, 1978, the Buddy Ryan era of 1986-90, but green and silver is the only choice.
Seattle Seahawks — They brought back the old blue and silver last year, which reminded everyone how their uniform choices have gone horrendously wrong. That Monday night game they played in Washington last month was the highlight of this season.
Denver Broncos — Last year's retool was a slight improvement, but the 'D' helmets are still a far better option.
New Orleans has some solid combinations, but spends too much time in all-black or all-white with no stripes. A crime against Mardi Gras. New England needs to welcome Pat Patriot back into the modern locker room.
Jacksonville and Tennessee should just start from scratch. Although, Washington did that a few years ago with the Commanders name change, and still came out with dreadful results. No NFL team should wear plain white pants. That's for high school freshman teams only.
Clearly, there's months of work ahead to fix the NFL, and it's all long overdue. The other sports will not be ignored. though.
MLB: Rest easy, fans, under the uniform czar, powder blue road uniforms will be the norm. The Phillies will be switching to their 1970s look full-time.
The White Sox have an abundance of nice throwbacks. Maybe a new set for every series is the answer.
NBA: Fewer alternate jerseys is the obvious move here. And pick a lane — does the home team wear white or dark? When a viewer turns on a random NBA game, determining which team is which shouldn't take five minutes. We can fix this.
NHL, WNBA, soccer: More study is needed for these sports. Just know the corporate sponsor logo plastered across the chest — we're not doing that. Not under this administration.
