Man faces charges after 8-hour standoff in Round Lake Beach

A 35-year-old Round Lake Beach man was charged with domestic battery early Friday following an eight-hour standoff in what was described as an isolated situation.

Luis Peña also was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon involving a reported disturbance at a home on the 300 block of Beachview Drive in Round Lake Beach.

Authorities responded about 3:37 p.m. to a report of a domestic-related altercation that initially happened outside the home. According to a news release, Peña was armed with a handgun and at some point went back inside where another family member was present.

That person was removed from the home but Peña refused to leave, police said. A portion of Cedar Lake Road and other roads in the area were closed.

Police said Peña had an arrest warrant on an unrelated case and other departments through the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System were called to assist.

The situation was contained and police used social media and other outlets to share updates and ask residents to avoid the area. The standoff ended just before midnight, police said.

Peña was arrested without injury to the parties involved or responding officers, police said. He was scheduled for first appearance court Friday.
