Johnny O’Brien

Cook County — Johnny O’Brien, Fremd, football

A quarterback, O’Brien led the Vikings to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. The Northwestern University recruit passed for more than 2,700 yards on the season. In a 34-33 quarterfinal win over Bolingbrook, O’Brien completed 22 of 42 passes for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for 74 yards on 12 carries.

Israel Abrams

DuPage County — Israel Abrams, Montini, football

Abrams, a highly recruited quarterback, led Montini to the Class 4A championship with a 47-33 victory against Rochester. In the state final he threw for 4 touchdowns and ran for another. He passed for 418 yards and ran for 46 more.

Kate Farrell

Kane County — Kate Farrell, St. Charles North, girls swimming

The senior won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.90 at the state meet, and she took the state championship in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.84 as St. Charles North claimed the second-place trophy. She also swam on the state championship 400-yard freestyle relay team, which won in 3:24.79. She will swim at the University of Illinois.

Nelli Sandor

Lake County — Nelli Sandor, Stevenson, girls swimming

Sandor led the Patriots to the state championship. At the state meet the senior won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.16 and swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay team, which finished in 1:42.89.
