Snowfall estimates still uncertain ahead of expected weekend storm

A snowstorm headed to the area this weekend is expected to drop enough snow to affect travel in the region.

However, meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville have yet to make any predictions on how much snow the suburbs are expected to receive.

Estimates are expected early Thursday, according to the agency’s social media posts.

Meteorologists suggest the heaviest amount of snow will arrive Saturday afternoon and could last into early Sunday morning.

“This won't be the biggest snowstorm to ever impact our region, but it also won't be just a few snowflakes,” weather service forecasters stated in an updated social media post Wednesday afternoon. “In all, Saturday is trending toward being a headache for regional travelers. Consider altering your travel plans if you have flexibility.”

Snowfall is expected to start late Friday and continue through Saturday night. Snow could turn to rain in some parts of the suburbs Saturday, meteorologists warn.

Sunday is expected to be very cold as the storm system moves out with lows dropping into the single digits.

Various winter weather advisories have already been issued for parts of northern Wisconsin, Michigan’s upper peninsula and eastern parts of Minnesota.
