Keep Veterans Day to honor veterans
Recently, I was leaving a shopping center on Randall Road. There is a sign that usually spotlights Carpentersville Community Events. It is visible as drivers approach the stoplight.
A Veterans Day sign was displayed with photos of Carpentersvilleās veterans. I was touched by the hometown recognition and honor.
President Trump announced on Veterans Day that he wants to rename Veterans Day to Victory Day for World War I. There are two holidays that are sacred to our country. Veterans Day and Memorial Day belong to veterans, their families and communities. It is about reflecting on the heroism of those who fought bravely and lost their lives and those who returned.
Veterans Day is not about victory. It is about the people who love this country and honor America by being willing to give their all. Veterans Day should not be renamed. I hope other Americans feel the same.
Instead, I suggest President Trump honor our veterans by refunding the money and needed staff to VA hospitals. Money and services were cut earlier this year.
That would be a valuable contribution to honor our brave men and women who have fought so valiantly.
Not all wars have ended in victory.
