Gianni’s Cafe closes original Kildeer location, focuses on Palatine restaurant
After serving the Kildeer community since 2003, Gianni's Cafe closed its original location Tuesday to concentrate efforts on the larger downtown Palatine restaurant.
The decision came down to economics rather than lack of community support or customer loyalty, said Mike Siena, who owns the business with wife Crissy.
Siena said the 2,100-square-foot Kildeer location only had 16 tables — simply not enough to cover labor costs, which have risen more than 70% since 2019.
On the other hand, the Palatine location at 18 W. Station Street spans 4,950 square feet and can accommodate significantly more diners. That spot opened in 2008.
“It’s an unbelievably strong restaurant in our downtown,” Palatine Mayor Jim Schwantz said. “The food is outstanding. Just the kind of business you want to have in Palatine.”
Gianni’s grew out of the Sienas’ love of enjoying time with family and friends at their favorite restaurants.
The restaurant became known for its open kitchen concept, where diners could watch cooks prepare meals.
“On a Saturday night, it's like watching the most exciting cooking show live and in person,” Siena said.
Many of the Italian recipes, he said, were passed down through generations. Siena’s family came from Northern Italy, while his wife’s hailed from the south.
“We can deepen our connection to the community — more events, more partnerships, more ways to show up for our guests and become even further ingrained in the community. We are looking forward to seeing our Kildeer customers in Palatine as well,” Siena said.
