CPS administrator to lead Grayslake District 46 as superintendent
A Chicago Public Schools educator has been chosen to lead Grayslake District 46.
Alfonso Carmona was selected unanimously Wednesday by the District 46 school board as the new superintendent succeeding Lynn Glickman who will retire after seven years at the helm in June 2026.
Carmona is the acting chief education officer at CPS where he previously served three years as chief portfolio officer. He was chosen from among 44 applicants in a national search conducted with BWP & Associates, a Libertyville-based firm.
“Dr. Carmona brings a distinguished record of educational leadership and a deep commitment to equity, innovation and student success,” school board President Stephen Mack said in an announcement.
“His collaborative leadership style and focus on continuous improvement align strongly with the values and mission” of District 46, he said.
The board approved a three-year contract for Carmona at a starting salary of $230,000 yearly.
Carmona also was principal at Healy Elementary school in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, superintendent of St. Augustine Prep in Milwaukee and a bilingual teacher at Inter-American Magnet School in Chicago.
He has a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Western Illinois University; a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from the American College of Education; a master’s degree in instructional leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Cartagena, Columbia.
District 46 has 4,000 students in eight schools: four kindergarten through fourth grade and one kindergarten through eighth grade neighborhood schools; an intermediate school for fifth and sixth graders; a middle school for seventh and eighth graders; and, an early childhood center.
