An alternate political universe
Recent developments have created the unsettling feeling of existing in an alternate universe, where the distinction between right and wrong has become blurred. Concepts such as freedom now seem to carry new limitations, liberty is redefined by restrictions, democracy is mistakenly associated with tyranny and even freedom of speech is in question. This, while the top 1% (who have nearly $50 trillion in combined wealth) continue to amass greater fortunes, as most people encounter increasing hurdles just to get by.
Sen. John Thune has accused Democrats of “taking the federal government hostage” as the nation faces this government shutdown. This accusation is a calculated move, with Thune arguing for a continuing resolution to allow more time for compromise. However, it is important to remember that during the Trump administration, Republicans frequently excluded Democrats from decision-making and show little willingness to compromise. In reality, continuing resolutions tend only to delay dealing with the core issues at hand.
The current impasse is driven by Democratic resistance to proposed cuts to Medicare/ Medicaid and reductions in Affordable Care Act subsidies. These policies would disproportionately affect those least able to bear the burden, further exacerbating existing inequalities. In my family alone, these benefits are vital. Do you know that the top 1% hold over 30% of the U.S. net worth. I'm sure these individuals cannot even see the impact on our wallets.
Everyday expenses, including housing, childcare, groceries and health care — continue to rise, making it more difficult for families to make ends meet. Trump’s goal is to centralize wealth and authority among a privileged few, thereby maintaining control over everyone else.
In this scenario, losing access to health care, deep cuts to SNAP, tougher Medicare work requirements, Medicare/Medicaid cuts and added restrictions could cause serious problems. These changes will affect everyone, even you.
