Children’s health: School’s in session and so are sick days. Virtual care can help
‘Tis the season for colds, coughs, pink eye, vomiting and countless other common pediatric health issues as the school year and school-based activities are in full swing.
But as busy parents know, life doesn’t slow down just because your child is under the weather. Between work, school drop-offs, and packed calendars, it can be a challenge getting your child in with your pediatrician or care provider.
Fortunately, these and many other of the most common pediatric illnesses and health concerns can be both diagnosed and treated virtually, saving you time, stress and a trip across town. Virtual pediatric primary care is an extremely convenient alternative to in-person urgent care for times when your child can’t be seen same-day by their pediatrician. It saves time, is available after typical business hours and offers individualized care from a pediatric provider from the comfort of your home.
Some of the conditions that can be managed via virtual care include upset stomach, allergies, constipation, COVID, diarrhea, flu, headache, minor burns and skin injuries, runny nose, sinus infections, skin rashes, sprains and strains.
Always remember, if your child is experiencing chest pain, trouble breathing, high fevers under 3 months old, allergic reactions or an asthma flareup, they should be taken to the emergency department.
Preparing for a Virtual Visit
While you can’t plan for an unexpected need for care, there are things you can do in the moments just before your visit to ensure it as successful as possible.
Check your internet connection and find a quiet, well-lit space in your home before both you and your child join the appointment. Plug the device you will be using into a charging source so your visit will not be interrupted. Be prepared to share any relevant medical information regarding your child with the provider, such as a list of medications and allergies and the symptoms they are currently experiencing. Take a few minutes to write down any questions you would like to ask.
During the visit, the provider will talk with you and your child to learn more about your child’s health and what might be going on to develop an individualized plan of care. Depending on your child’s diagnosis, they may require additional in-person follow-up care.
Virtual pediatric primary care doctors can also call in any prescriptions they prescribe to your child during the virtual visit.
