Five Week 6 high school football games to watch

Batavia (3-2) at Geneva (3-2)

One of the best parts of high school football are the rivalry games, and they don’t get much better than this one. This is the 106th meeting of a series that began in 1913 with Geneva clinging to a 52-49-5 lead after snapping a 13-game losing streak a year ago. Geneva’s defense is coming on strong but will have its hands full with Batavia quarterback Michael Vander Luitgaren and the Bulldogs’ strong offensive line and running game. Batavia had St. Charles North beat last week until a disastrous final minute when the North Stars scored 15 points for a 43-42 win.

Montini (5-0) at Carmel (4-1)

There’s going to be talent all over the field for this Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference White Division battle. Carmel features Nebraska-bound junior QB Trae Taylor who has completed 80% of his passes for 957 yards and 13 touchdowns — five to sophomore Greg Bess-Henning. Montini enters on a 15-game winning streak behind its own junior quarterback, Izzy Abrams, who has numerous Power Four offers. He threw for 250 yards and 2 TDs last week vs. Marmion.

Fremd (5-0) at Hoffman Estates (5-0)

These teams have more in common than their undefeated records as they battle for the MSL West lead. Fremd has scored 201 points, Hoffman Estates 198. Fremd has allowed 38 points, the Hawks a touch more at 55. Both teams have outstanding quarterbacks and can move the ball on the ground as well.

York (4-1) at Hinsdale Central (4-1)

It’s almost impossible for there not to be a must-see West Suburban Silver matchup each week, and Week 6 is no exception. The Dukes, 2-0 in conference play, will try to stay unbeaten behind players like Henry Duda who rushed for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week against Oak Park-River Forest. The Red Devils are a game back at 1-1 in Silver play, a last-second loss to Downers Grove North in Week 3. Riley Contreras threw for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns last week vs. Downers Grove South.

Wauconda (5-0) at Grant (4-1)

The Bulldogs bring a new No. 9 ranking in the Class 6A state poll into this Northern Lake County Conference clash even though coach Chris Prostka says they haven’t played their best football yet. That could be a scary proposition for Grant considering Wauconda is averaging 416 rushing yards a game with players like Jackson Rudolph (758 rushing yards, 18 total TDs). Grant quarterback Matthew Gipson has thrown for 1,243 yards and 13 touchdowns.
