Girls golf: Bell, Brazeau lead Fremd to regional championship

Fremd, Barrington and Buffalo Grove took the top three spots Monday at the Class 2A Conant regional to advance to next week’s New Trier sectional.

Fremd won the regional championship with a 304 total at Fox Run, five shots ahead of Barrington. Senior Merritt Bell and junior Alia Brazeau both shot 1-under 69s to lead the Vikings, who also got counting scores from junior Cara Spahic (82) and sophomore Kathy Lee (84).

Junior Reese Wallace paced Barrington with a 68. She shook off a double bogey on the third hole with birdies at No. 4, No. 5, No. 10, No. 13 and No. 16.

That round was good for second place at the tournament behind Buffalo Grove senior Courtney Beerheide who fired a 67 — capped with a birdie on No. 18, a 320-yard par 4. That was one of Beerheide’s four birdies on the back nine and one of six on the day.

Teagan Carden, Annie Carden and Olivia Yoon made up the rest of Barrington’s top four with a 74, 83 and 84, respectively.

In addition to Beerheide, Buffalo Grove’s counting scores came from Meagan Ryan (85), Abbey Foster (90) and Kaitlyn Bauman (95) for a 337 team total.

Conant’s Madeline Gutierrez (73), Schaumburg’s Megan Akers (81) and St. Viator’s Giavanna Mucerino (84) also finished in the top 10.
