Former Arlington Heights teacher convicted of child sex offenses in 1980s faces new charges, police say

An 85-year-old Arizona man convicted of child sex offenses in Arlington Heights in the 1980s was ordered held Friday on new charges, authorities said.

Sky Findlay, of Phoenix, was charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, police said. During an initial appearance at the Rolling Meadows courthouse Friday, Findlay was remanded to the custody of the Cook County Sheriff pending trial.

The latest incidents are alleged to have occurred prior to 2016 — when Findlay was still living in Arlington Heights — and involved two child victims known to him, according to Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Petar Milutinovic.

Detectives opened a criminal investigation years ago after receiving information from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. But it was only after learning new “significant details” that they were able to renew the investigation last April, leading to approval of an arrest warrant in June and Findlay’s extradition from Arizona on Thursday, Milutinovic said.

Findlay, a former teacher at South Middle School in Arlington Heights Elementary District 25, served six years in prison after being convicted on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The charges stemmed from a 1987 incident involving two children at Frontier Park swimming pool, according to published reports.

During the most recent police investigation in Arlington Heights, Findlay was serving a prison sentence in Arizona following his conviction on charges of indecent exposure at a Wendy’s restaurant in Tucson in 2016 and failure to register as a sex offender.

After Findlay’s sentence ended earlier this year, his probation officer was instrumental in helping take him into custody on the new Arlington Heights charges, Milutinovic said.

Findlay is due back in court Oct. 17.
