High school golf: Benet’s boys, girls win conference titles
Benet’s boys golf team didn’t have much trouble with Wedgewood Golf Club in Joliet on Monday, shooting a team total of 6-over-par 290 to win the East Suburban Catholic Conference championship.
Senior Caden Petersen led the Redwings with a 2-under 69, which tied Carmel junior Ryan Denapoli for the low score.
Sophomore Rory Neill (73), sophomore Charlie Davis (74) and senior Luke Donovan (74) had the other counting scores for Benet.
Oscar Marzec and Zak Roesch led St. Viator with a 73 and 74, respectively. The Lions finished third with a 299. Carmel was fifth at 311.
Chicago Catholic League: Sophomore Xander Schafer shot a 2-under 70 at Cog Hill to win the conference championship and lead Loyola to the team championship.
The Ramblers finished at 297, four strokes better than runner-up St. Francis.
The Spartans’ top four golfers all broke 80: Beckett Jones shot 73, Grant Olson 74, Chase Staudacher 75 and Matthew Curk 79.
Montini (323) was ninth, Marmion 11th (326), IC Catholic Prep 13th (345) and Aurora Central Catholic 14th (346).
Charlie Paciga led Montini with a 75, Keith Piercy paced Marmion with a 78, same as Montini’s Johnathan Doering.
Girls golf
Northern Lake County Conference: Lakes prevailed in a close battle with Antioch for the NLCC crown Monday at Renwood Golf Course in Round Lake.
Lakes finished at 404, three shots ahead of Antioch. Lakes got counting scores from Ava Swearengen (85), Alysia Friedel Foat (98), Ashlan Putka (109) and Violet Crary (112).
Swearengen won the individual title, 11 shots ahead of Cecilia Avalos from Grayslake Central. Marleigh Gaulin led Antioch with a 98 and Stella Neff had a 99.
East Suburban Catholic Conference: Benet’s 334 total at Carriage Greens in Darien earned the Redwings the ESCC championship.
Carmel was next at 373; St. Viator shot a 420 to finish fifth.
Benet freshman Lauren Gauss won the tournament with a 77, three shots better than Carmel junior Gabriella Stephens. Benet’s Madelyn Maldonado was third at 83. Carmel’s Gabriella Giangrande and Benet’s Kate Lewis and Reina Maceren tied for fifth with 87s.
Upstate Eight Conference: South Elgin senior Autumn Burnett carded an 81 at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in West Chicago to win the UEC title by three shots.
Freshman Grace Zicha led Glenbard South with an 84.
Conference tournaments continue all week with the DuKane Conference, among others, up Tuesday.
