Fox Valley barbershop choruses join in ‘A Cappella Palooza’
The two remaining barbershop choruses in the Fox Valley will stage a friendly singing competition on Sunday, Sept. 21. Both choruses were first formed in 1946 in Elgin and Aurora, and have performed continuously for Fox Valley audiences for almost 80 years.
It will be at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Geneva sanctuary, 211 Hamilton St.
The Fox Valley Harmonizers chorus is directed by John Schultz and the Aurora Lamplighters Chorus is led by Mark Barone. Both men have played leadership roles in the very successful five chorus Christmas programs staged in St. Charles and Wheaton for the past four years.
To make it easier to attend this show, no tickets or reservations will be required. This is a freewill donation event. Please add this date it to your Sunday afternoon schedule.
The program will be kicked off with both choruses singing the song “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better” to get the competitive juices flowing. Then each chorus will take turns singing a few of their best song sets like “Cabaret,” “What a Wonderful World,” “Drivin Me Crazy,” and “Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio.”
After a short intermission, the choruses will join forces to sing songs like “I’m Sitting on Top of the World,” “Spiritual Medley” and “Sweet Caroline.”
Three quartets will appear throughout the program: Just Like Dad, Card Monty and 2’nd Opinion. This latter quartet will perform their competition songs for the Sept. 26-27 Illinois District Convention in Bloomington.
The program will close with a grand patriotic rendition of “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” For more information, call Dan at (630) 270-9653.
