Palatine council has reservations about dog resort

Palatine village council members will decide whether to allow a dog day care and boarding facility in the Northwest Shopping Center.

WCDR Palatine, LLC is asking for a special use to operate K9 Resorts of Palatine, a 10,619-square-foot business at 541-569 E. Dundee Road.

The LLC is a subsidiary of Windy City Dog Resorts, which plans to open eight K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotels throughout the Chicago area. One already opened in Deerfield in June.

“We're committed to developing eight resorts throughout the greater Chicago area,” said Zack Nisbet, a partial owner of Luxury Pet Hotel Investments, LLC, the parent company of Windy City Dog Resorts who is also general manager of K9 Resorts of Deerfield. “The first few resorts that we do are super crucial to our success, because no one in the Midwest has heard of K9 Resorts.”

Nisbet said $3.5 million will be spent on building the facility.

The facility would allow a maximum 102 dogs, with an average daily population of about 50 dogs.

The council postponed a decision last week, with some council members raising concerns about noise.

Megan Murphy, attorney for the company, told the council K9 Resorts plans to address the noise by using a Bufftech fencing to dampen sound. Plans also call for the dogs to occupy an outdoor-like area, a mostly enclosed space for dogs, designed to provide an outdoor-like experience. Windows could be open and closed to control sound.

“Only a handful of dogs are allowed at group play at a time, and if there are any aggressive or overly loud or super disruptive dogs, they will be removed from that group play,” she said.

Neighbors in Concord Mills had expressed concern about the noise. The nearest residences would be approximately 180 feet away, officials said.

Murphy said a sound study level measured 180 feet away from the Bufftech fencing was four to five decibels.

“This is a wonderful, wonderful business, and I wish it was in a different location,” Council Member Doug Myslinski said at last week’s village council meeting.

Council Member Brad Helms said it might be better in an industrial park or bordering Route 53, where it would benefit from white noise in the background.
