Daily Herald Media Group CEO Doug Ray receives Pete Rosengren award at St. Jude’s golf outing

Doug Ray, CEO, publisher and chairman of the Daily Herald Media Group, was honored at a recent golf outing for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital held at the Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove.

Ray received the Pete Rosengren Memorial Award, named after a former Daily Herald sales executive.

Rosengren, of Batavia, died while saving children caught in a rip current while vacationing with his wife and three sons at Miramar Beach in Florida on March 28, 2021.

“Pete embodied the spirit of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas — bringing people together, lifting others up, and leading with heart. Today, we continue to honor that spirit and awarded the 2025 Pete Rosengren Memorial Award to Doug Ray,” St. Jude Area Managing Director Lindsay Mata said. “Doug has dedicated over 50 years to the Daily Herald Media Group, shaping its values and guiding its people. Among those he mentored was Pete himself, first as an intern, and later as a leader whose impact Doug helped nurture over two decades. Doug’s quiet strength, his belief in others, and his enduring support of St. Jude families make him a shining example of what this award represents.”

Ray accepted the award Monday.

“I was so honored to receive the award from St. Jude’s,” Ray said. “I know this was much less about me and more about the years of support for St. Jude’s by the Daily Herald. The company’s commitment has been unwavering, and those of us at the newspaper are especially proud of that. It’s such a great cause.”

Ray joined the Daily Herald as a local reporter in 1970, moving up the ranks to become managing editor in 1983 and editor in 1991. He was named president and chief operating officer in 1999, chief executive officer in 2002, publisher in 2009 and chairman of Paddock Publications' board of directors in 2010.

Since its inception 33 years ago, the St. Jude Chicago Golf Classic & Pickle Ball Tournament has raised more than $6 million for the children of St. Jude, according to a news release.

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
