U-46 seeks community input on naming of new middle school in Elgin
What should Elgin Area School District U-46’s new middle school in Elgin be named?
Want to weigh in? The district is inviting community members to submit nominations to help with the naming of the new school now under construction.
The middle school is expected to be open to welcome sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders for the 2027-28 school year. It will have capacity for 1,125 students.
Work on the 193,000-square-foot building at 2604 Rohrssen Road began in April. The $110 million project is expected to be completed and the school ready for occupancy in August 2027.
Through Sept. 19, students, parents, employees, alumni, and community members can submit name suggestions online. Nominations must follow Board Policy 4:150, which guides the naming of public school facilities.
The policy allows for names that reflect community values or honors individuals who have made significant contributions to society or education.
A community town hall will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Hilltop Elementary School, 1855 Rohrssen Road, Elgin, to gather feedback.
A name recommendation is scheduled to be presented to the school board on Oct. 20. The board is expected to vote on a name for the school at its Nov. 3 meeting.
