Motorcyclist, 27, dies in crash near Gurnee

A 27-year-old Grayslake man died after his motorcycle crossed lanes and collided with an SUV Saturday morning near Gurnee, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The crash occurred about 6:20 a.m. on Route 45 north of Dada Drive after the motorcycle navigated a curve, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation shows the 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle was headed north on Route 45 in an unincorporated area.

“A witness reported the driver of the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash, at one point temporarily losing control on the wet pavement, before regaining control,” Lake County sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.

The driver regained control and continued north past Dada Drive “but failed to properly negotiate a curve in the roadway,” Covelli noted.

The motorcycle careened into the southbound lane, hitting a 2005 Nissan Rogue driven by 69-year-old man from Lake Villa, authorities said.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his vehicle and suffered critical injuries. Deputies worked to save his life and applied a tourniquet, however, he was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

The Nissan driver was not injured and is cooperating with sheriff’s officials.

The crash remains under review by the Lake County sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Team.
