Glen Ellyn League of Women Voters march in the July 4 parade

The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn marched proudly in this year’s annual Glen Ellyn Fourth of July parade.

Placed seventh in line, with 65 marchers, all dressed in white, a symbol of women’s right to vote since the 19th century, they were enthusiastically welcomed by crowds of watchers along the route.

Earlier this year, the League had been denied entry into the parade by the Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Parade Committee, based on allegations of misbehavior by a member of the League at the start of last year’s parade. A cordial and informative discussion between representatives from the League and the committee found that the source of misbehavior last year was misidentified as a League member, and the League was granted permission to march.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League welcomes new members and civic-minded community members to its public meetings and candidate forums.
