Operation Dry Water to target impaired boaters this weekend
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit will be taking part in Operation Dry Water from July 4-6, targeting boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths, according to the sheriff’s office.
Each year, law enforcement agencies across the country participate in the national awareness and enforcement campaign to deter and remove impaired boaters from waterways. In Illinois, the sheriff’s office, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chicago are registered to participate.
