Chicago Dogs fall to Sioux Falls in Schaum’s first professional start
The Chicago Dogs lost 8-1 to the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday night with rookie Bryce Schaum making his first professional start on the mound.
Just his second game as a professional, Schaum went four innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six, including American Association home run king Jabari Henry twice.
The Canaries struck first in the top of the first, scoring runs off a wild pitch and a double from Calvin Estrada. The Dogs answered in the bottom of the first. T.J. Hopkins delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Brantley Bell, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Sioux Falls kept the pressure on in the fourth and fifth innings. Jordan Barth crushed a 2-run homer to extend the Canaries’ lead to 5-1. In the eighth Calvin Estrada launched another home run, this one knocking in 3, improving the Canaries’ lead to 8-1.
The Dogs could not get a hit outside of the first and ninth innings.
