Boys track and field: Hersey takes third, Prospect fourth at Deerfield sectional

Hersey’s Logan Farrell, who was third in the state last year in the shot put (18.20 m) and sixth in the state in the discus (51.33 m), had a big day Thursday at the Class 3A Deerfield sectional.

Farrell, who is committed to play football at Illinois in the fall, threw the discus 56.31 meters, nearly 5 meters better than his state throw a year ago. Earlier in the day, Farrell had a throw of 18.14 meters to win the shot put.

Farrell’s teammates Ikechi Ibe was second and Tim Stevens fourth in the 300 hurdles. Both qualified for state with Ibe running in 39.72 and Stevens posting a 40.25.

They helped propel Hersey to a third-place finish at the meet with a score of 80 points. New Trier won the sectional title with a score of 124 while Evanston was second with 88.5. Prospect finished fourth with 63 points.

Prospect juniors Luke Robinson and Brody Cushing both qualified for state in the 3,200. Robinson was third in 9:22.39 while Cushing was fifth with 9:26.23. Both finished behind New Trier’s Ben Crane, who ran in 9:04.83.

Prospect’s Jack Kruger was the sectional champion in the pole vault with a 4.46-meter jump. Teammate Nathan Cichy finished second in the 110 hurdles and qualified with a 14.76. The Knights’ 4x400 relay team also qualified for state, finishing third with a 3:23.19.

Maine South’s quartet of Payton Donaldson, Collin Kearney, Niko Kososioulis and Sean Schermerhorn combined to win the 4x100 in 42.33. Schermerhorn would later finish third in the 100 and qualify with his time of 10.85. Maine South’s 4x200 team was second and qualified with a 1:27.20. The Hawks’ Owen Garrelts finished fourth in the 1,600 and qualified for state with a 4:21.32.

Maine East’s Micah Rotter and Hersey’s Jackson Travis both hit 1.93 meters in the high jump to qualify for state.

Wheeling’s Rylan Solis-Mui finished sixth in the triple jump. But he was still able to qualify with his jump of 13.49.
