Two rescued from Fox River in Elgin after boat capsizes
Two people were rescued from the Fox River by the Elgin Fire Department after their boat capsized Sunday morning.
Authorities said a fire crew with a swift-water rescue diver responded to the river just north of Interstate 90 at about 8:15 a.m. Sunday to find two people clinging to an overturned boat.
The diver, with help from firefighters on the riverbank, brought both individuals to shore within about 10 minutes.
Both people were wearing personal flotation devices, which officials said contributed to their safe rescue. Both were assessed at the scene and did not require a trip to the hospital.
Elgin Fire Chief Rob Cagann said in a news release that anyone canoeing, kayaking or rafting the river — or any body of water — should wear a life jacket, as those crafts can capsize easily. Boaters should ensure there is a personal flotation device for every passenger and be aware that children under 13 are required to wear one at all times.
