Boys track and field: Prospect dominates Gummerson Classic; Glenbard West edges Jacobs for second
Area boys track and field teams were ready to push themselves to the limit Friday night at the 51st Ron Gummerson Cougar Track Classic hosted by Conant.
The meet featured Class A, B, and C groups in each event. Prospect ran away with the combined team championship of the 17-team meet with 140 points.
Glenbard West slipped past Jacobs 104 to 102.33 for second place followed by Maine South (75 points) in seventh, Schaumburg (74.5) in eighth, and Maine East (73) in ninth.
Prospect's Nathan Cichy (14.77 seconds) nipped Glenbard West's Ben Schoettle by .13 seconds for first place in the 110-meter hurdles. The Knights also got a first from Jack Kruger (4.42 meters) in the pole vault.
"Nathan (Cichy) always looks good. He's a really hard worker, and it was close to a season-best for him," said Prospect coach Jeff Collier, whose team took second in the 4x400 and 4x800. "We had a lot of point scorers in all three classes, and we have a lot of depth."
Jacobs' Matt Scardina won the 100-meter dash in 10.88 seconds, and the 200 in 21.86 seconds. Glenbard East's Josh Roimicher (22.31) took second in the 200. Scardina, Khristos Oludimu, Kieran Nally, and Jackson Cook won the 4x100 in 42.01 seconds. That same foursome won the 4x200 in 1:27.46.
The Golden Eagles' Max Sudrzynski (1:56.75) edged Maine East's Luis Mendoza by .21 seconds for first place in the 800. Jacobs' Prince Barnes (50.77 meters) easily won the discus throw.
"Both of our relays (4x100 and 4x200) dropped about a half a second tonight," said Jacobs coach Jason Borhart. "He (Scardina) has been a great addition, he came from baseball, and both relays are in the top 10 in the state."
Glenbard West junior Matt King (9:22.32) outdistanced Hoffman Estates' Brady Faulkner by three seconds for the 3,200-meter title. The Hilltoppers also got a first from Graham Faris (4:21.60) in the 1,600.
"He (King) started off well as a freshman, he is extremely competitive, and that was a huge PR for him tonight," said Glenbard West coach Dave Voland. "We're trying to see what we can do for conference and sectionals, and we're really blessed with a lot of young talent that is driven and love track."
Maine East's Roman Wolanin (16.27 meters) won the shot put. Second-place finishers were Hoffman Estates' Jamari Williams (high jump), Prospect's Shea Lewis (shot put), Schaumburg's Brandon Carver (discus), Glenbard East's Chris Renford (long jump), and Maine East's Muqeet Olatundun (triple jump).
The host Cougars got a first-place time of 49.42 seconds from Justin Czepiel in the 400-meter run. Schaumburg's Ray Black (39.43) set a school record in winning the 300-meter hurdles.
"Ray Black broke our school record which was 39.5 seconds set in 2006," said Schaumburg coach Ryan Senica. "We had a 1:58.1 from Zach Campbell in the 800 for a PR, and we had some good performances our of some of our young guys."
