Wheaton Warrenville South puts on the fiercely funny ‘Mean Girls’

Wheaton Warrenville South High School’s Performing Arts Department is closing out the performing arts season with “Mean Girls: High School Version.”

Based on the hit 2004 film and adapted for the stage by comedy legend Tina Fey, this high-energy production is so fetch and one you won’t want to miss.

“Mean Girls” brings the drama, glam, and life lessons of high school to the stage in a vibrant and unforgettable production. It’s not a regular musical. It’s a cool musical — and you’re invited!

Vivian Laslo stars as Cady Heron, the sweet, homeschooled new girl who’s just moved from the African savanna to the suburban wilds of Illinois.

Quickly swept into the complex ecosystem of North Shore High, Cady finds herself navigating a jungle of cliques — and none more powerful than The Plastics, led by the ruthless yet irresistible Regina George, played by Val Logan.

With the help of her new misfit friends Damian (Jake Fridlund) and Janis (Ellie Hay), Cady plots a hilarious and chaotic “Revenge Party” to take down the reigning Queen Bee and her sidekicks Gretchen (Addie Zaremba) and Karen (Sarah Pinne). But as Cady climbs the popularity ladder, she realizes that becoming a Plastic comes with a price — and that you can’t mess with the hive without getting stung.

Featuring high-energy musical numbers, including the showstopping “Apex Predator” and the unforgettable “Revenge Party,” the show laugh-out-loud, and surprisingly heartfelt.

The set design/construction is eye-catching, the student pit orchestra brings the score to life with flair, and the entire ensemble shines with energy and infectious enthusiasm in dynamic dance numbers.

Originally a Broadway smash nominated for 12 Tony Awards, “Mean Girls: High School Version” has been adapted to be appropriate and engaging while keeping all the humor and heart that made the original a fan favorite. So wear pink (even if it’s not Wednesday), grab your crew, and don’t miss this fabulously funny musical event.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 8-9, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in the high school auditorium, 1993 Tiger Trail in Wheaton.

Tickets are $12 online or $15 at the door.
