No tuition increase for 2026 at McHenry County College

McHenry County College recently announced that it will not increase tuition and fees for fiscal year 2026. The decision was made based on a combination of factors, including the availability of state grant funding, foundation grants, scholarships, and ongoing student need.

At their regular monthly meeting on April 24, the MCC Board of Trustees unanimously voted to keep the tuition and fee rate flat at $138.25 per credit hour for FY 2026.

“We know that families and individuals across our community are feeling the pressure of rising costs,” said Dr. Clint Gabbard, MCC president. “Keeping tuition steady is one way we can ease that burden and open more doors for students. It reflects our commitment to reducing barriers and supporting student success at every step. We want our community to know we hear you, and we’re doing everything we can to keep higher education within reach.”

Whether it be through grants, scholarships, or various innovative programs like the textbook savings initiative — which reduces or eliminates potentially costly course materials — the college is always looking for ways to save students money and add value to their experience, Gabbard added.

“MCC continues to pursue strategies aimed at improving efficiencies across the institution, maximizing available resources, and building fiscal resiliency,” said Gabbard. “This conservative approach has allowed the college to weather very difficult times over the last several years and sustain one of the lowest tuition rates in the state.”

“The Board of Trustees was committed to maintaining flat tuition and fee rates this year, recognizing that it would make a meaningful impact for our students and their families,” said MCC board chair Suzanne Hoban.

“Thanks to Dr. Gabbard and the senior leadership team’s thoughtful stewardship of our resources, we were in a position to make this choice without sacrificing the quality or integrity of our programs.”

In relation to other community colleges throughout Illinois, MCC costs 15% less than the peer average. In FY 2025, the state average tuition and fee rate was $162.47/credit hour, compared to $138.25 at MCC. In FY 2026, with no increase in the current cost structure, the college’s tuition and fees are projected to remain among the lowest in the state.

In addition to affordable tuition rates, the college offers students a variety of financial assistance options, including scholarships, grants, and payment plans. MCC also offers unique resources — such as the Student Success Fund — that provides money for students facing unexpected financial emergencies.
