Buffalo Grove man held on weapons charges after gun fired
A 61-year-old Buffalo Grove man is being held on weapons charges after police found weapons and ammunition in his possession while investigating a shots fired report, authorities said.
Kevin Smith is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm, according to police.
Police said officers responded to the Chevy Chase Apartments on the 1300 block of Johnson Drive at about 12:14 a.m. Thursday on a report of an armed robbery that later was classified as a man with a gun call.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with a witness who reported hearing a gunshot before being confronted by a man armed with a shotgun. Police said officers found a spent shotgun shell outside the address.
After receiving a description of the man from the witness, officers searched the apartment building and the suspect as Smith, who lives at the address, police said.
Police said Smith, tried to run but was apprehended nearby. Officers found several weapons and ammunition, including a shotgun, in his possession, police said.
