District 303 orchestra teacher honored with IEA’s Bob Haisman Early Career Teacher of the Year Award
Christopher Pettit, orchestra teacher at Bell Graham and Wasco elementary schools, was recently awarded the Bob Haisman Early Career Teacher of the Year Award by the Illinois Education Association.
Pettit was one of seven educators from across the state recognized during the IEA Representative Assembly for their outstanding commitment to their schools, students, communities, and public education.
The Bob Haisman Award honors early career teachers who are within their first 10 years of teaching and demonstrate exceptional dedication. Pettit, nominated by Wredling science teacher Rebecca Olson, expressed deep gratitude for his colleagues and the supportive teams he works with every day.
“My colleagues are the best … including the orchestra team, the Instrumental team, and the more expansive music and arts team. We have such supportive, talented, and hard-working people serving our community,” Pettit shared.
Pettit has been instrumental in shaping the District 303 elementary orchestra curriculum, applying his strong understanding of state and national standards alongside his background in private instruction. He has cultivated an inclusive orchestra program where all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, feel valued, capable, and motivated to excel.
Additionally, Pettit has elevated the perception of early career teachers by proactively pursuing professional development and assuming responsibilities often associated with more experienced educators.
As a graduate of the EMELT program, Pettit’s dedication to growth and excellence embodies the spirit of advocacy and engagement that the Bob Haisman Award seeks to recognize.
“We are very proud of him for his hard work and dedication to our students and the profession,” said Rachel Saldaña, District 303 Elementary Instrumental Lead Teacher and Wild Rose Elementary orchestra teacher.
The Illinois Education Association (IEA-NEA) is the state’s largest union, representing PreK-12 teachers outside the city of Chicago, education support staff, higher education faculty, retired education employees, and students preparing to become teachers. The IEA Representative Assembly serves as the organization’s legislative body, setting the union’s agenda for the year.
