Wheeling police cracking down on distracted driving in April

Wheeling police on Tuesday are launching a campaign to crack down on distracted driving as part of a statewide effort.

Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation and more than 200 local police agencies are participating in the monthlong program, according to a news release.

“Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 58 lives in Illinois in 2023,” Chief Jamie Dunne said in the news release. “We need everyone’s support in making our roads safer, which includes staying focused behind the wheel.”

Texting while driving or using a cellphone that isn’t in hands-free mode while behind the wheel is illegal in Illinois.

“During April, you will see increased law enforcement efforts as officers stop and ticket anyone who violates distracted driving and other Illinois motor vehicle laws,” Dunne said.

The campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
