Brush fires burned in Gurnee near interstate

Multiple brush fires burned in Gurnee on Wednesday afternoon near interstate 94, according to officials.

The fires were reported just after 12:30 p.m. near the interstate and Stearns School Road, according to Gurnee Battalion Chief Bob Heraver. Responding crews from the Gurnee and Newport Fire Departments found three brush fires around the roadway.

The fires’ proximity to the interstate prompted additional responses from the state police. The fires were extinguished in roughly 15 minutes, Heraver said.

Firefighters received reports that an individual had started the fires intentionally, but there was no evidence found to support those reports, Heraver said. No injuries were reported.
