New concepts in math: Educator presents at Elgin Kiwanis meeting
The March 12 meeting of Elgin’s Golden K Kiwanis featured a presentation by Amy Ingente, math coordinator for Elgin Area School District U-46.
Ingente has 25 years’ teaching experience and is on her ninth year as math coordinator. She stressed the new emphasis in teaching math as a collaboration among students and new flexibility in understanding and using a variety of solutions to math problems. While the standard algorithm is taught, students are also encouraged to visualize problems, often solving them without having to resort to lengthy step-by-step solutions.
Elgin’s Golden K Kiwanis Club invites everyone to attend its weekly meetings at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at Holy Trinity Church, 357 Division St., to learn about local programs or institutions. After the presentation, there is always time to interact with the speaker. Doughnuts and coffee are served.
