Mental health board serves critical need
My name is Caroline Guibord and my 6-year-old son has a rare genetic condition. He is one of only nine people in the world with this diagnosis, which causes significant developmental delays. I am writing on his behalf to urge you to vote yes this spring to create a mental health board in Palatine and ensure individuals with developmental disabilities get the care they need.
As a mother navigating the healthcare system, I can tell you firsthand that one of the biggest challenges is accessing the proper services quickly. Long wait times harm both short- and long-term outcomes for children. It benefits our community to help these children now so they can grow into happy, healthy and productive members of society.
Another major barrier is cost. Many services are either not covered by insurance or inaccessible due to provider restrictions. A mental health board would ensure reliable local funding to expand care, lower costs and provide lasting support.
Our story is just one of many. Developmental disabilities affect 1 in 6 people in the U.S. (17%), including intellectual/cognitive disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders (Autism, ADHD) and other related conditions (Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy). In Illinois, an estimated 2.15 million people have a developmental disability, including 11,560 right here in Palatine.
We recognize the privilege of having financial resources and two active parents to carry the mental load of navigating our son’s care. Most families are not in this situation and need more support. Please vote yes this spring to create a mental health board in Palatine. A stronger, more inclusive community starts now.
