Two people face charges of resisting and fighting with Lake County sheriff’s deputies after a traffic stop.

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, a Lake County sheriff’s deputy patrolling in the area of Washington Street and Lancer Lane in Grayslake observed a vehicle driving without its headlights on.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop but the driver accelerated to 80 mph in a 45 mph zone, authorities said.

The deputy caught up to the vehicle as it pulled into a driveway in the 1100 block of Cambridge Drive, Grayslake, where the traffic stop was conducted.

Upon stopping, the driver — later identified as Swayne Carranza, 38, of the 1500 block of Kenmore Avenue, Round Lake Beach — immediately exited the vehicle and refused to comply with the deputy’s instructions, authorities said.

The deputy placed Carranza under arrest and when deputies attempted to take him into custody, he resisted and pulled away, authorities said.

A deputy used a Taser to subdue Carranza and took him into custody.

Meanwhile, the passenger, Maria Lara, 32, of the 1100 block of Cambridge Drive, Grayslake, exited the vehicle and began interfering with the arrest, authorities said.

She kicked one of deputies and resisted their efforts to take her into custody, authorities said. Deputies then subdued and took Lara into custody.

Carranza is charged with resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, aggravated speeding, and multiple traffic violations. He has been released pretrial.

Lara is charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, and open transportation of alcohol. She is being held pending First Appearance Court.
