Oak Forest man charged in October death of co-worker at Gurnee facility
An Oak Forest Man has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence in the death of a Chicago man who was run over by a piece of equipment in October while working as a private contractor at an Illinois tollway facility in Gurnee.
Illinois State Police said Michael Vazquez was driving a skid steer at about 7 a.m. Oct. 18 when he backed up and over Gregory Bolls, 39, at the facility near Interstate 94 and Grand Avenue.
Bolls was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit on Oct. 20. Bolls died as a result of blunt-force injuries involving the crash, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.
Both men were private contracted employees of a firm laying asphalt, not tollway employees, police said. Vazquez had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash, according to an Illinois State Police press release.
The Lake County State's Attorney’s Office on Tuesday approved a charge of aggravated DUI involving death, a Class 2 felony. A warrant was issued, and Vazquez surrendered Tuesday at the Lake County jail.
He was in custody Friday pending a detention hearing Monday.
