Kane County celebrates Hamid Ahmed for 50 years of service

At 83, Hamid Ahmed remains an active presence at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva, marking 50 years of service in January 2025 — the longest tenure of any full-time county employee.

A native of India and a graduate in architecture and interior design, Ahmed moved to the U.S. in the 1960s, settling in Batavia. He joined the Kane County Development Department in 1975, working on projects, including repurposing the Sacred Heart Seminary in Geneva into what is now the Kane County Government Center Campus.

Over the years, Ahmed adapted to evolving technology, transitioning from hand-drawn blueprints to modern GIS mapping of Kane County. He has played a role in property rehabilitation assessments, working on the team that developed the Great Western Trail, implementing the county’s addressing system for unincorporated areas, and assisting in the county’s permitting efforts during the emergence of cable TV.

Beyond his professional contributions, Ahmed helped establish a mosque in Batavia and remains active in his community.

Despite his milestone, retirement isn’t in his plans just yet.

“That’s up to my wife,” he said with a smile.
