Sandwich ministry: Volunteers assemble 60 sandwiches for Aurora warming center guests
Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora continued its sandwich ministry on Sunday, Feb. 16.
After worship, a dozen adults and youth assembled 60 sandwiches to feed guests at an Aurora emergency warming center hosted by the church.
Area residents and organizations responded after Pastor Tammy Scott announced a sandwich-making party in an email to the congregation. Aurora social-service groups offering support included Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, and Hesed House homeless shelter.
Since November, Wesley has hosted an Aurora emergency warming center from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for folks in Aurora on nights when the temperatures drop below 15F degrees. Sandwich-making parties have been held to help feed warming center guests and to stock an outdoor, 24/7 community fridge. Stationed at Fresh Start City Church in Aurora, the fridge offers access to food for community members who may not have the means or ability to get to a food pantry.
Pastor Scott said, “We are trying to treat each guest with dignity and care and provide for their needs as best we can.”
