Basketball roundup: Neukrich’s buzzer-beating 3 lifts Wheeling; Prospect, Grayslake Central girls among other winners

Zach Neukrich drilled a 3-pointer as the horn sounded to lift Wheeling to a 57-54 win over Leyden Tuesday in Franklin Park.

Neukrich finished with 7 points while Brent Collar led the way with 22 points and Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala added 17 points for Wheeling (8-8).

Leyden (5-10) was led by Luis Regalado (16 points), Nick Gattusso (15) and Ernesto Sanchez and Mohamed El-Hindi, who each had 10 points.

Stevenson 39, Lake Forest 36: Rocco Pagliocca had all 11 of his points in the second half as Stevenson (9-6, 2-1) prevailed. Aidan Bardic added 10 points.

Warren 74, Mundelein 60: Jaxson Davis led Warren (11-3, 2-1) with 28 points while Zach Ausburn had 16 points and Jack Wolf had 13 points. Nathan Hauf led Mundelein (6-9, 1-2) with 15 points.

Waukegan 68, Libertyville 56: Libertyville (9-4, 1-2) got 32 points from Bryce Wegrzyn but it wasn’t enough to beat Waukegan (12-3, 3-0).

Lake Zurich 58, Zion-Benton 40: Lake Zurich (7-8, 1-3) continued its bounce from its fourth-place finish at the Jack Tosh tournament. The Bears were led by Kain Kretschmar with 20 points and Tyler Olson with 11.

Buffalo Grove 52, Vernon Hills 43: Buffalo Grove (6-10) got a big night from Alex Sirbu, who had 17 points and 16 rebounds, to go along with Edwin Karnauchovas and Dylan Ronczkowski, who each had 8 points. Vernon Hills (8-6) was pacced by Tyler Perritt, who had 17 points and Jeremy Zamost and Anthony Morgan Jr., who each had 10 points.

Deerfield 63, Maine South 42: The Hawks (7-8, 0-4) fell as Rico D’Alessandro had 24 points and Jack Williams 9 points.

Grayslake North 68, Harvard 30: Jayden Hunt netted 21 points, Uros Mitrovic 19 points and Brady Ballentine 15 points as Grayslake North (10-7) rolled.

Maine West 70, Elk Grove 50: Maine West (7-8) had three double figure scorers in Baker Blevins (24), Davion Tate (14) and Frankie Ferraiolo (12). Tate added 7 steals and 5 assists. Elk Grove (2-13) was led by Nolan Brand (19 points) and Cooper Casterton (13).

St. Viator 52, Notre Dame 47: St. Viator (9-5, 2-0) got strong performances from Dawson Charles (16 points), Henry Marshal (12) and Jacob Only (12.) to defeat Notre Dame (9-7, 1-2).

Girls

Prospect 50, Elk Grove 18: The Knights (13-4, 4-0) remained alone atop the MSL East by rolling past Elk Gove. Prospect was led by Zoe Black, who had 14 points, and Sadie Splinter, who had 13 points.

Barrington 47, Schaumburg 27: Lily Richmond scored 10 points and Maddie Anderle had 6 steals for Barrington (8-10, 3-1).

Rolling Meadows 59, Buffalo Grove 46: Meadows (13-4, 3-1) stayed a game back of Prospect in the MSL East behind Abby Ramel who had 25 points and 10 rebounds. Lizzy Andriano had 12 points, 8 assists and 5 steals while Dalia Grandberry had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Hersey 54, Wheeling 15: The Huskies (12-7, 3-1) also remained a game back in the MSL East as Sadie Marks led the way with 12 points while Kate Donovand and Ellie Molster each had 8 points.

Fremd 82, Hoffman Estates 5: After losing a triple overtime thriller to Alton on Saturday, Fremd (15-4, 4-0) bounced back in a big way. The Vikings were led by Greta Thompson who had 16 points and made a 3 three-pointers and Gracie Todd who had 11 points and also had a trio of 3-pointers.

Palatine 46, Conant 29: Addy Dersnah had a huge night for Palatine (10-9, 3-2). She hit all 5 of her three-pointers to lead the Pirates along with Halle Onyekonwu (9 points). Conant (8-9, 2-2) was led by Annabel Danso, who had 10 points.

Grayslake Central 53, Grant 25: Grayslake Central (13-4, 5-0) stayed tied with Wauconda atop the Northern Lake County Conference with their win. The Rams were led by Katelyn Marcelain with 15 points and 13 rebounds along with Annie Wolff who had 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Wauconda 49, Round Lake 20: Sarah Palmer had 19 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (12-1, 5-0). Grace Parker added 10 points and 5 rebounds and Alessandra Rodrigues had 8 points. Alexia Manalo led with 6 assists and 5 steals.

Antioch 48, Lakes 44: Antioch (6-9, 3-2) won the battle of these district rivals behind Heidi Rathman (14 pts.), Scarlett Carroll (13 pts.) and Enza Nawrocki (11 pts.) Lakes (6-8, 3-2) was led by Emily Ovaska (12 pts), Kaylee Anderson (11 pts.) and Sydney Schneider (10 pts.).

Grayslake North 44, North Chicago 15: Grayslake North (4-14, 2-4) had 11 different players score and was led by Lucy Roscoe’s 10 points.

Maine South 73, Deerfield 25: The Hawks (15-4, 4-1) remained in contention in the CSL South with a convincing victory.

Maine East 42, Niles North 29: Maine East (7-9, 2-3) git a big night from sophomore Arabella Silva, who finished with 24 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and two blocked shots. Shalini Patel added 9 points.

St. Viator 58, Maine West 33: St. Viator (12-5) built a 34-26 halftime lead to win in Des Plaines. Bella Gounaris knocked down 4 three-pointers on her way to 16 points while Kalin McCrea added 13 points. Kaitlyn Nutley led Maine West (7-10) with 10 points.
