Attitude, not taxes, the villain

Property taxes are the first target when economy is mentioned. They’re seen as a faceless demand for excessive cash, a money grab, simply a bill for waste.

But consider: Sewer construction/maintenance, snow removal, street/sidewalk construction/maintenance, storm damage removal, water delivery, building safety, senior assistance, flood control, forestry, ambulance, fire, police, parks, libraries, schools, insurance, legal costs, community planning/development, business and building permits and licenses (not a complete list). Then, the buildings, materials and equipment required to provide these services.

The cost of materials (everything) has risen (every year) my entire 76 years. Employee compensation/benefits rise with increased profits. Villages and schools receive the increased material costs. Many community members sell goods or services to taxing bodies. Some have concessions with them. Frequently government deals favor vendors, passing costs to taxpayers.

The individuals assuming responsibility (some 24/7) are your friends, neighbors, family members or you. Professional and skilled employees (many) performing extremely vital services. Delivering lifesaving medical emergency care, quality diverse education and a safe, stimulating vibrant community, requiring professionals is a competitive market. worthy of a living wage, insurance and a future. They have families as do we.

The cost of Comcast, Netflix, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Christmas, cell service, Great America, dinner out, vacations, big screens, video games, sports/entertainment admission, cruises, gambling, cosmetics/procedures, lawn care, salons, liquor, personal watercraft, second homes, extramarital activity have regular increases. None are essential. Record profits indicate homeowners willingly pay the increases.

We treat ourselves to life’s bounty. Begrudgingly, but willingly, fork over huge sums for entertainment and discretionary purchases. “Wants over needs.” The services provided from our tax dollars provide safety, security and a stimulating educated community. Parks and libraries coordinate with schools and community resources paving the way for opportunities. Our public servants, 24/7, silently support/protect the life we enjo.

They’re worth much more than “just a money grab.” #THANKYOUPUBLICSERVANTS.
