Cook and Lake County boys basketball roundup: Hersey stays perfect; Rolling Meadows, Warren win big
Hersey remained unbeaten as the Huskies ran past Springfield in the opening round of the Pekin Holiday Tournament.
The Huskies used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Springfield 68-52. Hersey was tied with the Spartans at 44-44 after three quarters and leaned heavily on Charlie Pomis, who had 20 points and 5 rebounds, Brody Variano’s 13 points and Jackson Hupp with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
At Jack Tosh at York
Rolling Meadows 79, Timothy Christian 24: The Mustangs (10-1) bolted to a 48-11 halftime lead and never looked back. Lazar Lazarevic, Gavin Escobedo and Ryan Meyer each had 10 points while Andrew Krestel had 8 points. Ian Miletic and Jaeden Warrener each had 7 points as 13 different players scored.
Conant 33, Highland Park 30: Bradley Biedke had 12 and 12 rebounds and Rohan Patel had 7 points as the Cougars (6-3) shot just 26% from the field but still outlasted the Giants.
Lake Zurich 62, Lemont 52: The Bears (4-6) rallied from a 29-22 halftime deficit to stun Lemont (8-3). Kain Kretschmar led the way for Lake Zurich with 19 points, Adrian Riep had 14 points, Evan Peterson 11 points and 8 assists while Connor Strauss added 8 points.
At Hinsdale Central
Maine South 52, Oswego East 47: Rico D’Alessandro poured in 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as the Hawks rallied from a 17-9 first-quarter deficit. Tyler Sierra and Jack Sladky each had 8 points while Sladky pulled down 10 rebounds.
At Wheeling
Deerfield 36, St. Viator 32 (OT): The Lions fell in overtime as Henry Marshall had 11 points while Dawson Charles and Jack Leonard each had 6 points.
Downers Grove North 53, Prospect 33: Downers Grove North (10-1) pulled away from a 19-19 halftime tie to post a win over the Knights. Prospect (5-7) was led by Ben Schneider, who had 14 points.
Glenbrook North 60, Libertyville 50: Libertyville trailed 32-20 at the half. The Wildcats stormed back behind Bryce Wegrzyn's 26 points and Terrence Davis' 9 points to pull ahead 41-37 with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Libertyville (8-2) couldn't maintain the momentum as Glenbrook North rallied for the win.
At Proviso West
Warren 70, Whitney Young 54: Warren (8-2) picked up a solid win over Young, leading for the entire game. The Blue Devils were led by Jaxson Davis, who scored 31 points on 11-of-24 shooting. Jack Wolf had 11 and Zach Ausburn had 9.
At Maine East
Vernon Hills 51. Northside Prep 31: The Cougars (7-4) had little trouble behind Tyler Perritt’s 17 points and Anthony Morgan’s 13 points.
Carmel 50, Providence 45: Ethan Matz tallied 23 points and Ethan Henderson knocked down 12 points as the Corsairs (1-8) picked up their first win of the season.
Sandburg 60, Maine East 59: The Demons fell just a point short. Jayden Dozie had 14 points for Maine East (2-9) while Brandon Schreiber added 10 points.
Hoffman Estates 81, Round Lake 27: The Hawks (9-3) were flying high behind Daiquan Daniels’s 20 points, Torrey Baskin’s 18 points, Austin Lesniak’s 8 points and 7 rebounds and Joey Hernandez’ 6 points and 4 rebounds.
Grayslake North 71, MCC 41: The Knights (7-5) got a huge night from Jayden Hunt who scored 30 points. Uros Mitrovic added 18 points.
