NAMI DuPage offers free support for holiday mental health challenges

According to the American Psychological Association, 89% of American adults feel stressed during the holidays. Some of this stress comes from the pressure to decorate the home, cook the perfect holiday meal, or purchase the perfect gift — even when the cost exceeds budget.

Thankfully, there are practical ways to reduce holiday stress and enjoy the season:

• Simplify the holidays. Homemade cookies and pies are wonderful, but store-bought options taste great and save precious time.

• Stick to your sleep schedule as much as possible.

• Eat and drink in moderation. Avoid overindulgence that can leave you feeling worse.

• Get moving. Exercise, even if it’s just a walk around the block, can help clear your mind.

• Learn to say “no.” Whether it’s a relative who wants to stay a week or attending multiple holiday gatherings in one day, set healthy boundaries.

• Focus on experiences over material things. Create budget-friendly memories that bring joy.

• Do something kind for someone else. Small gestures can brighten both your day and theirs.

Supporting mental health during the holidays

For individuals living with mental illness, the holidays can be especially challenging. Two thirds of those with mental illness report increased symptoms during this season. Anxiety often spikes, and depression deepens, particularly for those who have experienced recent loss.

If you know someone who is struggling, take time to reach out. Simple acts can make a difference: bring them a treat or a small plant; or send a thoughtful note if they live far away.

Better yet, pick up the phone. A quick conversation can lift both of your spirits.

Remember: Help Is always available

If you or someone you know needs additional support, help is just a call (or text) away. 988, the mental health crisis line, is available 24/7 for immediate support. The service is not just for individuals in crisis, but it can also be used for resources and to answer questions from family members, etc.

For in-person peer assistance, NAMI DuPage operates a free “Living Room” program from 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays. Adults, age 18 or older, can drop in for support and relief in a calm, welcoming environment.

Let’s make this season one of connection, care, and calm — because joy comes from shared moments, not perfection.
