St. Sophia Philoptochos raises $35,000 for hurricane relief
The Philoptochos chapter of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin recently held a successful Fall Greek Food Fest.
The local chapter helps the poor, sick, elderly, and anyone in need. Philoptochos means “friend of the poor” in Greek, reflecting the Church’s ancient Christian roots. Their mission is to assist all who require support.
Thanks to the combined efforts of dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and supportive community, they raised $35,000, all of which will be directed toward hurricane relief efforts through the International Orthodox Christian Charities.
Held in October, the Fall Food Fest showcased traditional Greek dishes like gyros, spanakopita, pastichio, baklava, and more.
Over two days, guests enjoyed the delicious offerings while embracing the spirit of generosity and compassion. This achievement was a testament to the power of community coming together to make a meaningful impact.
During the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, Dec. 1, they presented a $35,000 check to Nick Kasemeotes of the International Orthodox Christian Charities, who joined in the service.
These funds will directly support its critical on-the-ground hurricane relief efforts, providing essential resources and hope to communities affected by recent storms.
This accomplishment would not have been possible without the tireless work of volunteers, the leadership and guidance of Father Andrew Karamitos, and the unwavering dedication of Philoptochos members. The chapter members extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this effort and to Kasemeotes for his continued work with the International Orthodox Christian Charities.
Together, as a community, they are sharing Christ’s love through action and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
Thank you for helping spread the word about this incredible milestone and for supporting St. Sophia Philoptochos in its ongoing mission of service.
