Very short letter by Larry Buettner the other day, so short that I’ll repeat it here in full: “'In a democracy, people get the leaders they deserve.’ — Joseph de Maistre, 1811. May God protect us.”
I’ve a similarly short response: Thank God, then, that the United States is not a democracy.
Now I’ll add this: “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” — John Adams, 1814.
And, if I may, I believe God is doing very well in the protection department.
