CLC Theatre presents a hilarious whodunit in “The Play That Goes Wrong”
The opening night of a classic murder mystery goes disastrously wrong, and the results are an explosion of comic genius in the College of Lake County Theatre performance of “The Play That Goes Wrong” by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, directed by Dylan S. Roberts.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16; and 2 p.m. Nov. 10. All performances are at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts’ Studio Theatre at the Grayslake Campus. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $8 for CLC students, teenagers and seniors. Tickets are buy one, get one free Nov. 8 and 14.
“‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is an unhinged comedy masterpiece that will constantly surprise and amaze audiences with exactly the amount that can and will go wrong,” Roberts said. “From the moment I first read the script for this show, I was laughing out loud. As a director, I’ve always found comedy to be surprisingly difficult and technical, but working with this cast, and watching them crack each other up, is an absolute joy.”
The setting is a country manor where a murder takes place, and an inspector is assigned to the case to find the culprit. The plot is then given to the accident-prone thespians of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and from there, the play goes in many wayward directions. With a ramshackle set, an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead and actors who trip over everything — including their lines — “The Play That Goes Wrong” is guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter.
