Learn about Sherman Natural Prairie and Community Garden Nov. 5

The Sherman Natural Prairie and Community Garden will be presenting at the Nov. 5 meeting of the Elgin chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America. It will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Located on the 153-acre Advocate Sherman Hospital campus in Elgin, Sherman Natural Prairie and Community Garden is a 51-bed community garden surrounded by a restored prairie landscape.

It is managed through a partnership between Advocate Sherman Hospital and the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Master Composter volunteers.

Its mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the interconnectivity of all parts of the ecosystem, along with the importance of employing sustainable practices through environmental stewardship.

This mission is accomplished through teaching, learning and engagement opportunities to grow one’s own food, to compost and to participate in prairie restoration. Additionally, honeybee hives are located in the prairie and garden.

Beekeeping education is provided by volunteer beekeepers, who are members of the Northern Illinois Beekeepers Association. The public is welcome to attend the Nov. 5 event to learn more about the history of Sherman Natural Prairie and Community Garden as well as ongoing initiatives for prairie restoration, community gardening and composting activities and education.
