Money stolen from Des Plaines woman’s welfare account, police say

A Des Plaines woman reported on Thursday that more than $500 was stolen out of her state welfare account in a case of identity theft, police said.

The woman discovered the theft when she tried to use the debit card connected to the account, Des Plaines police said in a news release.

Police subsequently learned the card had been used in New York City earlier in the week.

The stolen money was refunded, police said.
