Cook and Lake County football roundup: Grayslake North wins wild 58-57 game over Grant
Grayslake North outlasted Grant 58-57 on a night where the defense for both teams took a night off Friday in Fox Lake.
Grayslake North (3-1, 1-1) scored on the opening kickoff on an 85-yard return by Cameron Bates as the Knights built a 46-35 halftime advantage.
Grant (2-2, 1-1) rallied to take a 57-52 lead on a 27-yard touchdown run and conversion run by Tyler Zdon with 3:25 to play. Landon Dovel would then score on a four-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left to clinch the victory for the Knights.
Mitchell Hughes threw 4 touchdown passes and was 15-of-36 for 326 yards. Bates had two of those touchdown receptions and had 7 catches for 175 yards. Chris Filas added 138 yards on five catches and had a touchdown. Tyler McBride also had a touchdown catch.
Dovel had two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter. He finished with 132 yards on 22 carries and Elijah Ayivi had an interception return for a touchdown.
Warren 43, Waukegan 14: After dropping their last two games, Warren (2-2, 1-1) got back on track with a convincing victory.
Buffalo Grove 22, Highland Park 0: Matthew Kaput rushed for 124 yards on 11 carries including touchdown runs of 17 and 34 yards as the Bison (1-3) won their first game of the season. Jacob Hensley had a 17-yard touchdown run. Dylan Spedale was 10-of-16 for 161 yards for Buffalo Grove.
Glenbrook North 30, Conant 7: Conant (0-4) fell behind to Glenbrook North and just couldn’t get back on track. Jakub Glowacki scored on a 35-yard touchdown run for the Cougars.
Elk Grove 28, Niles North 14: Elk Grove (1-3) won its first game of the year with a win in Skokie. Daniel Pasterski threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Grens. Pasterski threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Myles Schwartz and a 54-yarder to Dylan Berkowitz. Pasterski also has an 84-yard touchdown run while Berkowitz ran 41 yards for a touchdown.
Hersey 30, Glenbrook South 24: Less ended up being more for Hersey (2-2). The Huskies ran just 42 offensive plays, but scored on 4-of-8 possessions for their second win in a row. Colton Gumino was 12-of-17 for 184 yards and a touchdown and ran for another. Grant Kalamazoo caught a 57-yard TD pass and had 88 yards receiving. Brandon Jenkins (20 carries, 108 yards) had a touchdown run. Josh Riggs also had a touchdown catch while Conner Moga had a tackle for a safety in the closing minutes.
Wheeling 17, Maine East 14: Christopher Conejo booted a 24-yard field goal with 6:35 to play to lift Wheeling (2-2) to its second consecutive victory. The kick was set up by an interception and 40-yard return by James Lawson. Justin Ghibea fired a pair of touchdown passes to Grant Scheuerman that covered 28 and 85 yards. Tryfon Giolas ran for a touchdown and threw another to Shah Jan for Maine East (2-2).
Palatine 27, New Trier 3: Palatine (3-1) won its third in a row by rolling past New Trier.
Prospect 49, Evanston 29: It was three’s company for Noah Easter and Jake Skoog. Easter ran for 161 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns while Skoog threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another as Prospect (2-2) prevailed. Nate Cichy caught 7 passes for 110 yards, Lucas Deines had 43 yards and a touchdown while Nick Carlucci had 9 receptions for 102 yards.
Leyden 41, Proviso East 12: After getting shut out last week, Leyden (3-1, 1-1) responded in a huge way Friday.
Grayslake Central 19, North Chicago 14: Grayslake Central (3-1, 2-0) rallied twice to beat North Chicago. Braden Carlson threw a pair of touchdowns for the Rams.
Wauconda 56, Round Lake 0: Logan Olsen (10-of-14, 196 yard) threw three touchdown passes while Jackson Rudolph ran for three touchdowns as the Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0) rolled. Luke Sickmeir (6 receptions, 136 yards) caught a pair of touchdowns and Nick Ori also caught a touchdown pass. Cole Korycanek had a touchdown run while Brian Hart, Sickmeir and Kaden Pemberton each had a fumble recovery.
St. Laurence 17, Carmel 14: St. Laurence kicked a field goal with under 30 seconds to play to lift the Vikings over the host Corsairs (2-2, 0-1).
