Shepherd of the Prairie to celebrate its Lutheran heritage

Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huntley will celebrate an October monthlong celebration honoring its Lutheran heritage with several educational and fun events.

“We invite our congregation to come together in faith and fellowship,” says Senior Pastor Mark Boster. “As part of our monthlong celebration we will invite our worshipping community to read ‘The Book of Harmony’ by Dr. Martin J. Lohrmann. His book is a commentary on ‘The Book of Concord’, which is the basis of our Lutheran confessions. We will also be privileged to have Dr. Lohrmann speak at the end of October at a special event and guest preacher on Reformation Sunday, Oct. 27.”

The books will be available at Shepherd of the Prairie for a donation.

The four-week study of the book will kick off the fall’s “7’s Discipleship” small group ministry.

On Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pastor Bill Waxenberg will be teaching a “Lutheranism 101" class. “Attendees will learn what it is to be a Lutheran Christian and what we truly believe about God, Jesus, the Bible and the world in which we live,” said Pastor Waxenberg.

This fun interactive study is an excellent way to find out more about Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation, and our Lutheran Heritage. Child care is provided.

The congregation will continue to have the opportunity to come together at the church to watch the most recent critically acclaimed movie, “Luther,” on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The monthlong celebration concludes on Reformation weekend. A celebration dinner will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, with special guest speaker Martin J. Lohrmann, author of “The Book of Harmony.” Guests will have an opportunity to have copies of their book personally signed by the author. After the dinner, all are invited to Sew Hop’d brewery in Huntley to enjoy fellowship and listen to The Guttenberg German Band.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church Reformation weekend closes with Lohrmann preaching at the 9 and 10:45 a.m. services. There will be special music, including a brass quartet, praise band, along with great hymns and music of the Church.
